Are You a Capable Decision Maker?

Understanding and using strategies for decision making comes easier to some than others. Some people have an innate sense of how to manage difficult situations, others don’t. For those of us who find decisions difficult, there is good news – strategies can be practised, reflected upon and learnt.

An obvious and easy strategy is to watch those around you. See how decision making is handled by your leaders or peers. You learn as much about inappropriate strategies, as you do about good strategies, if you keep your eyes open to what’s happening around you on a daily basis.

One thing to remember in decision making is that there is no ‘right’ strategy for every situation. Once you stop looking for it and relax to work through each situation using a variety of strategies, you’ll gain confidence in yourself as a decision maker and handle anything that might come your way.

So what are the best strategies to employ in decision making?

Patti Johnson, in her article, Avoiding Decision Paralysis in the Face of Uncertainty, in this month’s Harvard Review writes an interesting article that gives examples of strategies that the best leaders use in uncertain times. She also provides 2 strategies to consider in helping leaders gain clarity and reduce uncertainty. You can read Patti’s article here – Avoiding Decision Paralysis in the Face of Uncertainty.

Good luck with your decision making strategies. I’d love to hear your thoughts.
